my sketchbook

i was inspired by this video about "ugly art" by an artist i found on youtube, her name is marie-nöelle wurm.

i never used to dabble much in "abstract" art, but the method of scribbling and using all kinds of colors that might not "go" was a liberating and enjoyable experience.

playing with colors and how they look together has encouraged me to get more creative.

i've also enjoyed experimenting with different shapes and line types.

the practice of making ugly art has helped me let go of worrying about whether or not i'm doing things the right way. the freedom of just drawing for the fun of it, without being concerned with the final product, is unmatched.

i've noticed since starting this new sketchbook that i like filling the page with all kinds of lines to kind of connect the different things i've drawn.

this was an ugly art exercise about drawing trees, it was a lot of fun. seeing the way marie-nöelle made trees was really cool and gave me ideas on how i could draw trees differently.

i saw a meme that had this prompt of drawing 12 frogs from memory and i thought, "challenge accepted!" to make it even harder i told myself i had to draw each frog from a different angle, in a different color, and in as many different positions as i could muster. i don't have enough colored pencils or skills to get 12 shades of green. it's cool to think about how living in the northeast u.s., i expect frogs to pretty much be green, but if i lived in brazil seeing a bright red frog could be a normal occurance. trying to draw a frog jumping was super hard and i am so glad i tried it.

the whole drawing from memory thing made me want to try drawing more things, so i drew some leaves.

i drew some cats, and again i had the prompt in mind that each cat should be in a different position and a different color. i would love to have a blue cat some day.
